Intro to Part 5 and Chapter 16 both Sections:
During this portion of the book Strayer discusses a new kind of society which included a movement that would change society for the rest of its days. He compared and contrasted the North American Revolution, French Revolution, Haitian Revolution as well as the Spanish American Revolution.
- The North American Revolution involved the British government oppressing its North American colonies through taxation without representation. What emerged from this revolution was the emergence of a free nation that was religiously tolerant as well as free from a monarchy.
- The French Revolution involved a tremendous amount of violence and also brought about the question of equality in politics for women.
- The Haitian Revolution according to Strayer was a "source of enormous hope and great fear. " The term "Remember Haiti" will make people reflect back on the horrors of the Revolution as well as the amount of courage it took for it to occur, it will also will make it so rememberable that the Revolution will hopefully never happen again.
